Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library

Welcome back!

Today I will be talking about the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library here in Topeka. I used to work at the library back in my hometown, so I am definitely a huge advocate of public libraries. The library here in Topeka is fantastic and I would highly encourage you to go and visit and support them.

The TSCPL offers many different things. They have a children’s library, a cafe called the millennium cafe, an art gallery, a “booktique,” and is home to over 500,000 books. They also have a “bookmobile” that travels across the country.

In addition to these things, TSCPL also offers many different events throughout the year. They host events geared towards children which encourages them and their parents to foster good reading habits and education. They also offer events for people of older generations such as iPad workshops where you can learn technology tips and tricks. In addition to these events, they also host various academic events such as guest speakers, and book discussions. They also host many musicians and poets at the library.

A library card at the TSCPL allows you to gain access to many different services. The library also offers many different services to those who have a library card. They have computers, wifi, and printing services available for use. They also offer meal programs and a farmers market every Monday. They can also assist you with various types of research such as genealogical research. They also offer assistance by providing job and career help and by helping you make a personalized reading list. Every library card holder also gain access to Lynda.com where you can have access to many different online learning resources. Having a library card at the TSCPL is completely free and I would highly encourage you to get one.

Make sure to check out your local library!

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog, A College Student's Guide to Topeka! My name is Melissa King and I'm currently a college student attending Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Throughout this semester I am going to be trying to find fun and exciting things to do in Topeka on a college student's budget. I decided to choose this topic because I'm new to Topeka and I want explore where I will be attending school for the next four years. I also chose this topic because many college students don't take advantage of what their college town has to offer and I hope this gives them some inspiration. Each post will be me talking about a free or cheap activity that I have found done in Topeka. Through this blog I hope to encourage you to explore Topeka and learn more about the Kansas capital! See you in Topeka!

Washburn Student Recreation and Wellness Center

Welcome back! The first place I will be talking about is the Student Recreation and Wellness Center here at Washburn University. The SRWC is free for Washburn students and is an awesome place for those looking to find a place to have fun while also taking care of yourself. On the first floor of the SRWC there is a three-court gym where students can play basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports. Also on the first floor there is the infamous 25 foot rock wall where more adventurous students can challenge themselves. I haven't gotten the courage to do this yet, but my friends and I may in the future. The second floor is home to fitness loft and walking track. The fitness loft contains lots of fitness equipment ranging from treadmills and stair masters for beginners to weight sets for more hardcore exercisers. The walking track outlines the first floor, and overlooks Yager stadium where you can often watch various sporting events taking place. The SWRC also has many opp...
