Topeka Zoo

Welcome back!

In today’s blog post I will be talking about the local zoo. We have a great zoo here in Topeka and I would encourage you to check it out! The Topeka zoo offers quite a few exhibits and lots of learning opportunities

Admission to the zoo is $5.75 for adults and $4.25 for children. They also offer discounts for large groups and field trips.

The zoo offers several different exhibits. One exhibit is the waterbird lagoon, which is three different ponds that include a variety of different birds including swans that people can feed. Another exhibit is the Kansas carnivore exhibit where you can find several different animals native to Kansas including mountain lions and otters. Another fun exhibit is the tropical rainforest which is really cool. The tropical rainforest includes bats, birds, reptiles, plants, sloths, and other species that are native to the tropical rainforest. The zoo also offers exhibits of popular animals including hippos, tigers, and apes.

The zoo also hosts several events throughout the year. Every year around Halloween, they host Boo at the Zoo, where kids can treat-or-trick at the zoo. They also host giraffe feedings where visitors can interact with and learn more about the giraffes. They also hosts a photography contest each year. The zoo also does a good job about teaching the community about the importance of conservation. They host a few conservation events each year and support many different conservation projects. The zoo also hosts winter, spring, and summer camps for kids who love the outdoors and learning about animals. They also offer an “Eco Club” which promotes protecting the environment.

I hope you all check out the Topeka zoo! We are very lucky to have such a great zoo here in Topeka!

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog, A College Student's Guide to Topeka! My name is Melissa King and I'm currently a college student attending Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Throughout this semester I am going to be trying to find fun and exciting things to do in Topeka on a college student's budget. I decided to choose this topic because I'm new to Topeka and I want explore where I will be attending school for the next four years. I also chose this topic because many college students don't take advantage of what their college town has to offer and I hope this gives them some inspiration. Each post will be me talking about a free or cheap activity that I have found done in Topeka. Through this blog I hope to encourage you to explore Topeka and learn more about the Kansas capital! See you in Topeka!

Washburn Student Recreation and Wellness Center

Welcome back! The first place I will be talking about is the Student Recreation and Wellness Center here at Washburn University. The SRWC is free for Washburn students and is an awesome place for those looking to find a place to have fun while also taking care of yourself. On the first floor of the SRWC there is a three-court gym where students can play basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports. Also on the first floor there is the infamous 25 foot rock wall where more adventurous students can challenge themselves. I haven't gotten the courage to do this yet, but my friends and I may in the future. The second floor is home to fitness loft and walking track. The fitness loft contains lots of fitness equipment ranging from treadmills and stair masters for beginners to weight sets for more hardcore exercisers. The walking track outlines the first floor, and overlooks Yager stadium where you can often watch various sporting events taking place. The SWRC also has many opp...
