Capitol Dome Tour

Welcome back! Recently I had the opportunity to go on a historic tour of the capitol with the Washburn leadership institute. We also had the chance to go to the top of the capitol dome where we were able to get a great view of Topeka. The historical tour allows you to learn about the construction of the capital as well as the history behind the artwork in the capitol. It was really interesting to see some of the famous artwork and learn about how they were able to build such an elaborate building such a long time ago. The capitol was recently renovated and on the tour you are able to learn about that process. During the historical tour, you also have the opportunity to view the state Senate, Supreme Court, and House of Representatives chambers. This was really interesting because we were able to see where our elected officials work everyday. If you are looking for some exercise, you can climb the 296 steps on the capitol dome tour. On the dome tour, you are able to view the inne...

Cheap Restaurants in Topeka

This post is all about cheap restaurants in Topeka. I will be talking about two different restaurants that are cheap or have student discounts. While these restaurants are on the cheaper side while still providing good food and a fun atmosphere. The first restaurant is The Burger Stand at College Hill here in Topeka. This restaurant is a great place to go with friends and has a really fun atmosphere. It is located on College Hill, which is not too far from the Washburn University campus. They serve gourmet hamburgers and hot dogs along with various types of seasoned fries. They also have several vegetarian and salad options for those looking for something a little bit more healthy. Some of the unique things about the The Burger Stand is that they have outdoor patio seating and a back dining area which includes ping pong tables, foosball tables, and a pinball machine. The Burger Stand is on the pricier side, however they offer Washburn students a 10% discount and on Mondays they off...

Washburn Student Recreation and Wellness Center

Welcome back! The first place I will be talking about is the Student Recreation and Wellness Center here at Washburn University. The SRWC is free for Washburn students and is an awesome place for those looking to find a place to have fun while also taking care of yourself. On the first floor of the SRWC there is a three-court gym where students can play basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports. Also on the first floor there is the infamous 25 foot rock wall where more adventurous students can challenge themselves. I haven't gotten the courage to do this yet, but my friends and I may in the future. The second floor is home to fitness loft and walking track. The fitness loft contains lots of fitness equipment ranging from treadmills and stair masters for beginners to weight sets for more hardcore exercisers. The walking track outlines the first floor, and overlooks Yager stadium where you can often watch various sporting events taking place. The SWRC also has many opp...

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog, A College Student's Guide to Topeka! My name is Melissa King and I'm currently a college student attending Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Throughout this semester I am going to be trying to find fun and exciting things to do in Topeka on a college student's budget. I decided to choose this topic because I'm new to Topeka and I want explore where I will be attending school for the next four years. I also chose this topic because many college students don't take advantage of what their college town has to offer and I hope this gives them some inspiration. Each post will be me talking about a free or cheap activity that I have found done in Topeka. Through this blog I hope to encourage you to explore Topeka and learn more about the Kansas capital! See you in Topeka!
