Gage Park

Welcome back!

In today’s blog post I will be talking about Gage Park. Topeka has lots of different parks around town, but I will just be focusing on Gage Park. There are many different activities and events that are available at Gage Park and I would highly encourage you to check it out. Gage Park is completely free and it is a great place to go if you and your friends are trying to find something to do.

Gage Park is home to the Blaisdell Family Aquatic center. While there is an admission fee to get into this part of the park, there it is a great water park to check out in the summer. Gage Park also is home to the Helen Hocker Theater where lots of local talent comes and performs. This is in partnership with the Topeka Civic Theater and it hosts live theatre in the park and other various events. If you are bringing younger children to the park, they offer many activities for them as well. They have a mini train that takes you on a mile long trip around the park, and is only $1.50 per rider. Gage Park also has a great playground and many different picnic areas available for use.

Gage Park has a carousel that was originally built in 1908. This carousel is really cool to ride and to take pictures around and is again only $1.50 per rider. Gage Park also has a dog park available. This part of the park is fenced in and has areas for both small and large dogs. Another great place to go as a group or to take pictures in is the rose garden. The Gage Park rose garden has more than 5,500 different plants and is a great place to visit.

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog, A College Student's Guide to Topeka! My name is Melissa King and I'm currently a college student attending Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Throughout this semester I am going to be trying to find fun and exciting things to do in Topeka on a college student's budget. I decided to choose this topic because I'm new to Topeka and I want explore where I will be attending school for the next four years. I also chose this topic because many college students don't take advantage of what their college town has to offer and I hope this gives them some inspiration. Each post will be me talking about a free or cheap activity that I have found done in Topeka. Through this blog I hope to encourage you to explore Topeka and learn more about the Kansas capital! See you in Topeka!

Washburn Student Recreation and Wellness Center

Welcome back! The first place I will be talking about is the Student Recreation and Wellness Center here at Washburn University. The SRWC is free for Washburn students and is an awesome place for those looking to find a place to have fun while also taking care of yourself. On the first floor of the SRWC there is a three-court gym where students can play basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports. Also on the first floor there is the infamous 25 foot rock wall where more adventurous students can challenge themselves. I haven't gotten the courage to do this yet, but my friends and I may in the future. The second floor is home to fitness loft and walking track. The fitness loft contains lots of fitness equipment ranging from treadmills and stair masters for beginners to weight sets for more hardcore exercisers. The walking track outlines the first floor, and overlooks Yager stadium where you can often watch various sporting events taking place. The SWRC also has many opp...
