Mulvane Art Museum

Welcome back!

Since its been awhile since I wrote about a Washburn related event, so I decided to check out the Mulvane art museum here on campus. Mulvane is located next to White concert hall and the Garvey fine arts center. We are so lucky to have an art museum on campus and Mulvane does a great job of bring art exhibitions to campus!

Mulvane is home to 4,000 works of art, and is completely free to the public. Mulvane hosts many different art exhibitions. In addition to their in house art collection they host over a dozen guest exhibitions each year. They currently have six exhibitions on display, and they are constantly planning new ones. The exhibitions Mulvane hosts are innovative, and often focus on a broad range of topics.

In addition to exhibitions, Mulvane also has an art lab. The art lab is great for people of all ages, and is completely free of charge. When you visit the art lab, you have the chance to create your own piece of artwork and to gain some new knowledge about art. Mulvane also offer several art classes, that focus on topics such as, “How to make your own Sugar Scrub,” and “Meditate with Modern Art.” These classes aren’t free, but they are definitely worth it if you are interested in strengthening your artistic abilities.

Mulvane also hosts an art fair each year. The art fair, which is usually held in early June, includes live music, food, children’s activities, as well as art exhibits. The art fair is usually held on Washburn’s campus and is a great place to go if you are trying to find art in Topeka.

I hope everyone takes the time to check out the Mulvane art museum!

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog, A College Student's Guide to Topeka! My name is Melissa King and I'm currently a college student attending Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Throughout this semester I am going to be trying to find fun and exciting things to do in Topeka on a college student's budget. I decided to choose this topic because I'm new to Topeka and I want explore where I will be attending school for the next four years. I also chose this topic because many college students don't take advantage of what their college town has to offer and I hope this gives them some inspiration. Each post will be me talking about a free or cheap activity that I have found done in Topeka. Through this blog I hope to encourage you to explore Topeka and learn more about the Kansas capital! See you in Topeka!

Washburn Student Recreation and Wellness Center

Welcome back! The first place I will be talking about is the Student Recreation and Wellness Center here at Washburn University. The SRWC is free for Washburn students and is an awesome place for those looking to find a place to have fun while also taking care of yourself. On the first floor of the SRWC there is a three-court gym where students can play basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports. Also on the first floor there is the infamous 25 foot rock wall where more adventurous students can challenge themselves. I haven't gotten the courage to do this yet, but my friends and I may in the future. The second floor is home to fitness loft and walking track. The fitness loft contains lots of fitness equipment ranging from treadmills and stair masters for beginners to weight sets for more hardcore exercisers. The walking track outlines the first floor, and overlooks Yager stadium where you can often watch various sporting events taking place. The SWRC also has many opp...
